Exquisite Plique-à-jour
Enamel Butterfly Ruby Diamond 18 karat gold
Plique-à-jour (French for
"letting in daylight") is a vitreous enamelling technique
where the enamel is applied in cells, similar to cloisonné,
but with no backing in the final product, so light can shine
through the transparent or translucent enamel.
This is a multicolored butterfly that just vibrates with
life. We believe it was made in Hungary around the turn of
the century. A wonderful, joyful brooch / pin fit for a
queen.
Condition: Recently restored.
Primary Material: enamel
Primary Stone: Ruby (two rubies in the body)
Secondary Stone: Diamond (thirty two diamonds)
Metal: 18 karat gold
Weight: 12.6 grams
Measurements: 2.5in long, 1in tall, and about 1/4in thick
Original Price in our Gallery: $9,985

Mid-Victorian Jet Mourning Brooch converted to
a pendant as well. Easily dated due to the C clasp and the jet

was added more recently in the mid 1950s so the previous owner
could wear it as a necklace. So it is not entirely period
accurate.
